The country has long been aware of the shortage of talents in various aspects of robotics and intelligent
manufacturing. In 2018, the Ministry of Education issued the “Notice on the Announcement of the First
Batch of “New Engineering” Research and Practice Projects”, which proposed to promote ” “New
Engineering” construction, creating intelligent manufacturing, robot engineering and other majors,
emphasizing the practicality, cross-cutting and comprehensiveness of the discipline, focusing on the
close integration of new technologies such as information communication, robot control, software
design and traditional industrial technology.
Under this initiative, the number of artificial intelligence and robotics majors offered in undergraduate
and vocational colleges has increased sharply. According to statistics, the number of undergraduate
artificial intelligence majors has increased from 35 in 2018 to 345 currently; the number of undergraduate
robotics engineering majors has increased from 86 in 2018 to 302 today; and the number of industrial
robotics majors in higher vocational colleges has increased from 523 in 2018. There are 708 schools as of March 2021.
In October this year, the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the
General Office of the State Council issued the “Opinions on Promoting the High-Quality Development of Modern
Vocational Education”, which clearly proposed to focus on major national
strategies, closely align with the trends of industrial upgrading and technological change, and give priority to the
development of advanced manufacturing and new materials. , modern information technology, artificial intelligence
and other industries need a number of emerging majors, encourage listed companies and industry leading enterprises
to organize vocational education, and encourage all types of enterprises to participate in vocational education in accordance with the law.
